Empty nest syndrome isnโt an actual clinical condition, but it does come with some very real emotions such as sadness and loneliness. And it can be hard to get past the fact that the kids are no longer filling the house and it just feels too big.

There is, of course, the old standbys of turning your kidโs bedroom into a craft room or home office. But if youโre looking for something different, have you thought about hosting an exchange student? This could be a fun opportunity to get exposure to other cultures and itโs a great way to fill the house with the energy of a young person. There are tons of exchange programs out there or you could reach out to your local high school to see if they have resources.
Depending on your homeโs layout, you could earn extra cash and rent out part of your home on either VRBO or Airbnb. A perfect scenario might be a lower bedroom with a nearby bath and maybe a family room with separate entrance. I have a legal apartment in my house and we rent it out short term on VRBO and itโs been great. I can rent it out as much or as little as I want and itโs been a great way to meet people from all over the US, plus the extra cash goes towards paying off my mortgage faster.
