Maybe you’re not ready to sell at this time, but you’re unsure what to do with all that extra space. 𝘏𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘢𝘳𝘦 3 𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘢𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘱 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘣𝘢𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘴𝘦 𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴.
Empty nest syndrome isn’t an actual clinical condition, but it does come with some very real emotions such as sadness and loneliness. And it can be hard to get past the fact that the kids are no longer filling the house and it just feels too big.

Okay, so the last kid is off to college or getting settled into their new career and now the house feels too big for you. But maybe you’re not quite ready to actually move into a smaller home. So what to do with all that space? Well, we’ve got two great ideas that you may not have thought of.
There is, of course, the old standbys of turning your kid’s bedroom into a craft room or home office. But if you’re looking for something different, have you thought about hosting an exchange student? This could be a fun opportunity to get exposure to other cultures and it’s a great way to fill the house with the energy of a young person. There are tons of exchange programs out there or you could reach out to your local high school to see if they have resources.
Depending on your home’s layout, you could earn extra cash and rent out part of your home on either VRBO or Airbnb. A perfect scenario might be a lower bedroom with a nearby bath and maybe a family room with separate entrance. I have a legal apartment in my house and we rent it out short term on VRBO and it’s been great. I can rent it out as much or as little as I want and it’s been a great way to meet people from all over the US, plus the extra cash goes towards paying off my mortgage faster.
